When you think of the term “road-trip”, on the two reactions may happen. One reaction may give you a sense of dread thinking about being in a car with cranky, whiny kids asking every few seconds, “Are we there yet?” The other reaction may give you a sense of excitement, ready to explore and see what adventure awaits in the great open spaces.
If you raised your hand to the first reaction I mentioned, you’re in good company. Planning for long road trip can be overwhelming and exhausting just thinking about it. But when you’re equipped with all kinds of tricks, hacks, and tips, you’ll load the whole family up with excitement!
We took our first big road trip 3 years ago. It was epic! We traveled to two destinations; Salt Lake City, Utah and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Let me tell you, that’s a whole lotta driving!
Because I used to be a travel consultant, I put on my travel planner hat, did my research, and found some really cool resources along the way.
During the course of planning, I also found some fun ways to keep everyone busy and entertained. Here is my list of the Top 5 Ways to Make Road Trips Fun Again:
1. Stock up with snacks and drinks. Each kid had their own plastic container of all their favorite snacks. The kids enjoyed picking out all the snacks they normally don’t get to eat; Skittle, Doritos, M&M’s, Cheetos…you name it. You can also choose a much healthier option and not go crazy like we did.
2. Stop at each “Welcome” sign whenever you enter a new state and take a picture! We had so much fun doing this. For one, it got everyone out of the car to stretch their legs, but it was also a great opportunity to take photos and add it to a scrapbook. The whole family will enjoy looking back at all the places you drove through along the way!
3. Download age appropriate audiobooks. This was sooooo much fun! Our kids loved listening to “The Worst Class Trip Ever” by Dave Barry. We laughed so much! You can download the audio book on an app called Audible. If you click here, you’ll be able to start a 30 -Day FREE TRIAL and get 2 FREE AUDIOBOOKS! What I love about audio books is it hones into listening skills. It made the longer stretches of our trip peaceful. And the parents said, “Woo hoo!”
4. Bring a book everyone can read and enjoy. My kids are into trivial things like, “How many gallons of milk can a single cow produce in a day?” A perfect trivial book to take along on road trips is “National Geographic’s Weird But True USA”. Not only are they reading, but they’re learning cool and fun facts about our great nation! How about that for hitting two birds with one stone?
5. Take a tour of each state from the comfort of your vehicle. What I love about visiting different states is getting to learn and discover what makes it unique. You get that experience when you go on tours. With the TravelStorys app, you can have a guided tour without ever leaving your car! The app tracks your location and automatically checks to see if there is a tour available wherever you are located! This became very handy when we drove through Yellowstone National Park. The app begins with a narrator who talks about the location you are driving through. They share interesting facts and history. This is a super cool app to have on your next road trip!

We just got back from a road trip! I made sure to have plenty of junk food lol!! And my son loves those Weird But True books…wish I would have thought to grab some before we left. We would have had some fun with those in the car.
Welcome back! Junk food is our special treat. 🙂
Love road trips!! That Travel Story app sounds interesting!
Love all your suggestions. I wish I had us stop at all the welcome signs when traveling, easier to do on more remote roadways than hwys.
I understand. Traffic can be a little crazy. Safety first.
I’m glad we aren’t the only family who eat snacks like Dorito’s and Skittles in the car. Swedish Fish are also a favorite of ours.
I lived in Colorado for 5 years. Drove from the east the first time and never saw that sign. I also drove down to Albuquerque and north into Wyoming. You have to tell me where that sign is. It’s so cool.
Hi Leeanne! I believe we were headed south from Wyoming into Colorado and then into Texas.
I love all the signs and stop at as many as I can. I love your tips too!
Thank you, Shirley!
These are some great tips. I like the travelapp suggestion. I have never heard of it. I will check it out.
Thanks Heather!
We do the state signs too! We also enjoy lots of books and audiobooks on our road trip.
That’s awesome!
My family used to play the grocery store game on long car rides.
That sounds fun and interesting!
Fun tips and I don’t have kids, but I’d do all of these on road trips. Yummy Food & drinks is one I don’t live without on long trips
Food and drinks are top priority for sure! 🙂
I love that app idea! Something that would be fun for ME as well as the kids!
Indeed!
Love that tours app…going to download it right now!
Let me know how it goes!
These are great tips! I am going to implement some on our next trip!
Please do! And let me know how it goes!
Great tips. Wish I would have had these options back on my old family trips. Love your content!
Thank you so much, Candy!
Great advice! I like road trips, but the older I get I have to stop a whole lot more!
Take as many stops as needed!
I’ve never heard of the TravelStory App! I will definitely check that out.
Our kids are dying to go on a road trip. I much prefer to fly, but my hubby loves to explore as we travel to a destination.
I definitely agree that having lots of good snacks is KEY to keeping everyone happy. Once someone gets “hangry”, it’s all downhill from there!
Lol! We try to keep “hangry” at bay too. It makes for a difficult trip.
Love these ideas!!! Yes yes yes about the snacks!!! And we love stopping at the state welcome signs for a photo too! We are doing more and more road trips since we bought our campervan last year. Thanks for the info on the tour app! I will be downloading it!!!
You are most welcome!
My favorite road trip was a 2 weeks drive from AZ to CA and CO and then back to AZ. Sleeping in tents.
Wow, sleeping in tents sounds like fun!
You nailed it with #1! Snacks are a must for all road trips.
We LOVE our snacks!
Snacks seem to be the most important in our family for sure. Lot’s of snacks. We tend to bring our dog on road trips and snacks disappear!. Great tips for the trips.
Lol! Sneaky pup!
These are great tips! We love audiobooks as well. Thanks for sharing!
You are most welcome!
Great tips! We love road trips and take a few each year. My best tip is to find interesting things to do along the way – if you’ve got the time, it definitely breaks up the driving and keeps everyone happy!
Great tip, Pam!
What great tips! Would never have thought of the audio books!
Thank you! Our kids loved the audiobooks.
Books are a life saver on road trips! My fiancé gets car sick though and can’t read in the car so we have switched to audiobooks
Audiobooks are a great alternative!
